"Oscar Night" for Mat Marvels

( from December 1978 issue of "Wrestling Revue" magazine )
To the victor go the spoils in wrestling's whirligig. How sweet it is to be idolized. It's even better when the
wrestling fans vote you their top favorite. Winning awards on the West Coast is nothing new to matador
Chavo Guerrero, the Mexican champion. This year, Guerrero was voted "Most Popular Wrestler" in Los
Angeles by the rambunctious fans at the Olympic Auditorium.
" I sincerely believe the mat fans of Los Angeles are the most wonderful and dedicated fans in the world,"
said Chavo. " I'm not saying that because I've been voted the most popul20ar wrestler. I'd say the same
thing even if I wasn't picked as their favorite wrestler."
Chavo's mat fans are legion. They stampede to the Olympic Auditorium in great numbers to watch their idol
swing into action against the most hated and dispicable grapplers. Winning awards runs in the Guerrero
family - a brother Mando Guerrero copped "Rookie of the Year" honors for 1978.
By marked contrast, the Olympic Auditorium fans - with Count Billy Varga making the presentation - voted
Moondog Mayne and Roddy Piper the co-winners of the infamous "Most Hated Wrestlers Award".
If ever a contest is held to determine the most dedicated and inspirational mat fans the spectators of the
Olympic in Los Angeles would win the award hands down. Where but in Los Angeles do the rambunctious
fans shower their idols with awards in such a fashion ?

Chavo taking the microphone to thank the wrestling fans in Los Angeles for selecting him
as the "Most Popular Wrestler" for the second straight year. ( Billy Varga is at his left. )
Ex-matman Billy Varga, a popular figure who has made numerous presentations of gold watches and trophies
to the darlings of matdom, said "June 7, 1978, was a proud day for me since I made the presentation of
favorite wrestler to Chavo Guerrero who won the same award last year. Incidentally, that was the night
Roddy Piper took the gold watch I gave Chavo and broke it into a million pieces."
Piper and Moondog Mayne are making a mockery of the awards presentation. Sure the award show isn't on
the same international level as the Oscar or Emmy shows but Piper and Mayne demonstrate a lack of class
in upstaging what is L.A.'s version of "Oscar Night" for matmen.
One has to admire the class of Billy Varga who year after year steps in to reward the top - notch grapplers
of Los Angeles. " I know what it means to a grappler to receive the applause and affection of the fans.
When I was wrestling in the 1940's and '50's, I got my share of awards and I've got a room full of trophies
and championship belts. Why, I even put one of my belts on exhibit at a recent show in Long Beach," said
Billy Varga.
The presentation of awards to matmen is probably the best thing that has happened to grappling since the
advent of television back in 1947. From the look and size of the awards in appears the show is here to stay.
Cry your heart out, Roddy Piper and Moondog Mayne. Both of you deserve to receive the "Most Hated
Award" as you both lack class and charisma and are jealous of Chavo and Mando Guerrero.
Viva the Guerrero Brothers ! Viva Mexico ! Hats off to the wonderful and spectacular mat fans at Olympic
Auditorium. They're No.1 in the world in the hearts of the wrestling fraternity and Chavo Guerrero is
Numero Uno in wrestling's gallery of champions on 18th and Grand in Los Angeles.
